Three Secrets To Becoming An Action Machine
1. Earmark A Specific Block Of Time For Perusing Info On The Web
Wasting hour after hour of your valuable and irreplaceable time on activities that shouldn’t take up more than 30 minutes a day has to come to an end.
What I’m referring to is everything on the Web that you do to consume information – reading messages and emails, checking digg, Facebook and Twitter, reading blogs, the news – everything!
Give yourself half an hour to an hour every day to do nothing but savor it, take care of it, or however you look at it. However, once you’ve used up your time, then you can’t go back to it at all until later in the day or evening, and only if you’ve accomplished all your other other tasks.
Stop these things from taking over your life by putting them in their place!
You must stop checking this sort of stuff every 10 minutes. It will not only kill whatever momentum you might have built up, but in all probability, the rest of the world isn’t going to sit at a standstill waiting for your next Twitter update.
2. Take Control Of Your Inbox
Managing your email is a massive topic, to the extent that a whole book could be written on this subject (and in fact there have been – tons of them, to be precise), but these would likely be the highlights:
Answer any emails that can be replied to quickly (and by quickly, I mean in less than a couple of minutes) immediately.
Don’t make your replies any longer than they need be. Lose the ’small talk’ and get to the point (but maintain sincerity). However much you dislike writing long emails, it is almost certain that the person receiving lengthy emails dislikes them even more.
Delete any emails you haven’t responded to after a month. If you hold on to them for any longer, then every time you see them, you’ll just end up feeling guilty. Guilt is an action-killer, so get rid of the old emails and get rid of the guilt!
3. Stay Disconnected When You Work
Yes, this means, close your office door (use a Do Not Disturb sign if necessary), turn off your phone (you can do it, I know you can), and close your instant messaging program.
You must get momentum working for you, because once you get that ‘flow’ going, you are able to take action much more quickly, with much better results.
So, when you’re working, make sure you eliminate all distractions!
