Networking’s Biggest Lie
By Keith Woolgar
There may be certainly certainly that face-to-face networking is considered one of the most, if not one of the most effectual ways to showcase oneself, your current cause or ones small company. It is a fact.
Generally, networking is less expensive than conventional advertising and marketing, and ties you professionally to your business interest, right in front of your clients or future clients. Carry your itinerary to an event, make a business lunch right then! Hours of cold calling and target marketing; stand aside! Who wouldn’t rather meet their customers and potential customers in an casual, convenient, non-confrontational atmosphere like a networking event or via a networking group?
Go figure! So why else would there be a multitude of business networking breakfast meetings, business networking happy hours, speed business networking events (you name it) and more popping up all the time?
Gone are the era of being confined to signing up for chambers of commerce and other service organizations, simply because now you can connect with, greet and glad hand other networkers anytime, seven days a week if you need to. Imagine, BNI and LeTip are networking brand names comprised of thousands of business networkers on their own…it’s a networking society, folks! Now, with the current “online venues” like Facebook, networking has gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact by way of the popular “social media”, which wasn’t even a common expression merely three short years ago. We as a society network, network, network!
The lie is that “business networking” succeeds. The reality is , that attending networking events, signing up for groups, being on Facebook, etc. does not work whatever as a stand alone action to closing sales or engaging in business. Without a doubt, it takes a lot more…
Maybe you have ever returned from the networking event with a pocketful of business cards with absolutely no resulting leads? Like, zero? Of course, you have. Did you ever stop a networking group due to the fact “it didn’t work”? Yes you did.
Facts are, the churn rate (old members falling out being replaced by brand-new members) could be around 50% annually in a given networking organization. Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
